Overview TOURISM SECTOR IN MADAGASCAR
Located in the Indian Ocean, Madagascar is the 4th largest island in the world with its 5000km of seashore most with fine white sand and dotted with many lagoons. For the Indian Ocean, Madagascar could be in the coming decades, a new tourist destinations outside the usual destinations such as Seychelles, Mauritius .... With its warm and mild climate as much as its friendly citizen, the country has everything to be a new meeting place for westerns and easterns seeking tropical tourism and climate. The island has the advantage of being open to all forms of tourism, such as traditional tourism, eco tourism and sustainable tourism.
The country has a largely unexploited tourism potential. Although the country has a total of nearly 14,000 rooms, all class combined, this figure is still insufficient in view of the steady growth of tourism volume and could have a difficulty to cope with a boom. There are many popular tourist sites such as Nosy-Be, Sainte-Marie, Andakana, but many sites with high potential still untapped. This can be explained by difficulties of access and lack of communications networks; however, these problems are negligible compared to the likely return on investment.
The exploitation of these areas could also be supported by a Malagasy tourism promotion throughout the world and the development of the training profession. There are of course several tourism training centers and a private institute which are constantly improving.
The access to property in Madagascar is encouraging given that the public land can be used in lease and private land acquired at very affordable prices.
Currently, five airlines connect Madagascar to the world. These are Air France, Corsair, Air Madagascar, Air Austral and Kenya Airways.
In 2005 the country received support from the World Bank to boost its tourism sector and make it a pillar of its economy by 2010.
